3 Reasons Why You Should See A Chiropractor Even If You Aren’t In Pain

People often ask, “If I’m not feeling pain, why should I see a chiropractor?” Though chiropractic care often alleviates pain, there are benefits to regular treatment outside of pain management. Regular chiropractic care has been shown to improve health outcomes and reduce overall healthcare costs. So how can a chiropractor help you when you aren’t in pain? What is the role of a chiropractor in terms of your overall health and wellness? Why should you add your chiropractor to your regular check-ups and other regular medical care? Read on to learn the answers to these questions and more.

Is chiropractic care important even if I have no pain?

“The whole premise of chiropractic treatment is that we want to be out of pain, and if you’re never in pain, that’s the better option. Yes, a lot of people come in, and they’re hurting, and we do a lot of aggressive treatments to get them feeling better over months,” explains Dr. Kyle. That doesn’t mean you need to be injured or in pain to seek a chiropractic adjustment. You can visit your chiropractor even when you’re feeling well and still receive benefits.

“That’s a maintenance program. It’s less aggressive. You’re not going to see the patient as often because rather than treating acute pain, you keep the patient out of pain.  We all have microtraumas, small things that we do that our body doesn’t like. These are things that we’re doing every day (how we sit, sleep, work, etc.) that cause small changes to the muscles and the musculature of the musculoskeletal system. Over time that buildup will create more discomfort and pain,” according to Dr. Kyle. A maintenance or wellness program helps keep you in optimal health by keeping these microtraumas from building up and, in doing so, preventing further injury or discomfort.

“As you’re doing maintenance, you’re living your life. That means you might trip or fall and tweak something. Maintenance care helps ensure that you’re in better shape, so it won’t hurt as much or as long or as badly. ”

When should I see a chiropractor?

When it comes to maintenance, everyone will have their own opinion. Some clinics say once a month; some clinics say every two weeks, etc. The treatment plans are up to the discretion of the chiropractor. At Smerglia Chiropractic, there is no single predetermined maintenance program for patients. “I don’t have the same answer for everybody. Once patients are feeling good, I like to try and spread out their visits slowly to try and figure out what their maintenance program’s going to be. As soon as a patient says, ‘I started tightening up. I started feeling things pulling back,’ that’s when we know we need to bring them in. If they begin feeling tightness at six weeks, we know to bring them in every five weeks for maintenance.”

When shouldn’t I see a chiropractor?

There are times when you may not need to see a chiropractor. For example, if you have osteoporosis, a particular abnormality, or acute injury in your body or suffer from arthritis, chiropractic treatment may not be your best solution. So how do you know whether you should seek or continue treatment with a chiropractor? Ask your chiropractor! As experts in spinal health care, a chiropractor is well suited to tell you whether or not they can help you achieve your wellness goals.

“If we’re not seeing progress when we should, we need to evaluate that. Why aren’t we seeing that change? Is there something else we can do here in the clinic, or do we need to refer them out? If I’m noticing that we’re not making progress, I’m going to refer you to additional care. That might include massage therapy, physical therapy, a primary care physician, etc.”

What kinds of conditions does a chiropractor treat if I go for pain?

The most common conditions seen daily in chiropractic offices include neck pain, back pain, and headaches. Still, chiropractors also routinely treat pain in joints like the elbows, fingers, shoulders, knees, and ankles. Additionally, chiropractic care can treat everyday ailments like golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow as well as plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, IT band discomfort/injury,  tech neck (or forward head carriage), and herniated or bulging discs (often misnamed ‘slipped’ discs).

In short, if you’re looking for a way to improve your overall wellness, chiropractic care may be the right option for you. Making chiropractic visits a part of your overall medical care and wellness plan can help to reduce injury, alleviate pain without the use of prescription drugs, and improve your quality of life.
